The first RFID Easter Egg Hunt

A good friend informed me about bringing high tech to children of all ages.   The event occurred early today in a suburb of Beijing China.  A local ham operator came up with this idea ( of course, it had to be a Ham Operator ). Over 100 brightly coloured eggs were equipped with RFID tags and placed all around a local orphanage. Each of the kids were given a I-phone with a small RFID directional app.  They were shown how to use it and they were all let loose to find the “hidden eggs”.   It was great, one ham operator stated, “My 2 year old daughter found 10 eggs within 5 minutes” .

Why RFID tags on eggs, he replied, “Because of the size of China, we have too much RF interference and need more people trained in sniffing out the sources of these interferences. What a natural ! The kids were great.   I know back in the states, you have fox hunts, but they are not for the younger children.  Here in China, we call them “Egg hunts”  This way there is an instant award of finding their egg.

When asked when the children eat the eggs, is there any problems of them eating the RFID tag?  He responded, not really.  These RFID Tags are biodegradable and disappear with 48 hours.  But, he added, there is a side effect.  This new technology is a good way for the parents to locate their child. We are thinking more like the west.  We will begin marketing this new biodegradable RFID tag to all the parents to keep in touch with their children. What a great idea!
