vp8sti/vp8sgi South Sandwich and South Georgia Xpedition

Jay Slough, K4ZLE, will tell us all about his adventures in the Southern Ocean with the Intrepid DX group when they activated two DXCC entities on the top 10 needs list. Both entities lie just outside the Antarctic Circle and Jay describes the trip as a southern hemisphere – roaring 40s, furious 50s – version of Disney›s «Mr Toad’s Wild Ride.” Disney’s ride only lasts a few minutes, while their ride was about 6 weeks long!

Thirteen intrepid hams spent the better part of January and February this year activating these two entities. This ‹Twofer› DXpedition made a significant dent in giving many newer DXers an all time new one and providing band slot fills for those pursuing multi-band DXCC or DXCC Challenge credits. This operation has been recognized by several DX organizations for its excellence, receiving “DXpedition of the Year” from the SouthWest Ohio DX Association this year.

Even if you are not a DXer, the program should prove to be entertaining as it will give you a chance to vicariously experience travel and scenery from one of the most remote regions of Earth.
